[33]***This game gets lots of hate from players, but I think this one is actually pretty average. There are some elements that I don't like. Most of the fights, especially at the beginning is against wildlife, the whole side-scrolling knive-stabbing action is not as typical Rambo-like as other more standard Run and Gun style top-down shooters of other Rambo versions in the 80s. While not a better game per se, the C64 Rambo game from Ocean just fit the Rambo style much better. The character also looks a bit goofy and is not really well animated. On the plus side must be noted that they tried to tell a story. When I compare this to other NES games released in or before 1987 this one does pretty well in the story section and its not your typical fantasy scenario that often came with such kind of Action-Adventure titles.***This game is based on them movie [i]Rambo: First Blood Part II[/i].

This is a Zelda II clone. In Japan, Zelda II for the Famicom Disk System was released about 11 months before the Famicom version of Rambo. The Famicom version of Rambo has a level layout very similar to Zelda II. The USA version reduces the similarity be rearranging the levels a bit.

The way to the princess however is blocked by doors. Many doors. So your main objective is to collect keys with the appropriate colors to make progress. Although you start with 50 lives (at least in the US version) the game is not easy. Pixel-perfect jumping is needed and there is the constant threat that you run out of keys and trap yourself. This is also my main complaint about this game, cause it tends to become confusing and frustrating. And your only attack (with a knife) has a much too short range. As with many early ASCII Famicom/NES games this game originated on MSX homecomputers. The rooms of the castle are bigger though in the NES version (the MSX games featured only one-screen rooms). Apparently there was an obscure cartridge version published in Japan also.***The NES version of "Dr. Chaos" was released over a year after the original Famicom Disk System release in Japan. "Dr. Chaos" is an unusual action/platform game that reminded me of Konami's [game=#8335]The Goonies II[/game], because in both games you can explore special rooms in first-person-style adventure mode. In Dr. Chaos these rooms are only for finding extra weapons and ammo as well as the entries to warp zones. In those zones you make your way from left to right, kill a boss, collect a part of a super-weapon, and finally - and thats not really nice - walk back to the entrance of the zone in search for the next zone. The game is only average in graphics and music. It is playable, there are no control problems. But the game feels a bit repetitive. The warp zones are too similar, a few more graphical themes would have been nice. The adventure rooms look bland and undetailed and mainly consist of trying to open everything and hitting all the walls for finding hidden passages. You can choose between one of three different characters (explorer, priest and esper) each with its own life and "holy" stat bonuses and different attacks/weapons. The way is often blocked by doors which need the appropriate key and there are also very few adventure/puzzle elements with hints hiding in bonus items. You explore a forest and underground caves in search for three orbs guarded by evil bosses to ultimately rescue a fairy kingdom. Well, Spelunker II is a bit better than its predecessor, but still the controls aren't the best. The most annoying thing about this game is the knockback effect you get from touching enemies which feels like pushing you back a quarter of the screen. That makes the knockback in games like Castlevania feel very tame in comparison. The levels have a rather complicated layout with exits not only to the left and right but also up and down and often strangely connected paths. [52]***Konami did a pretty good job with this arcade port. Lots of variety in background graphics and good music. Gameplay is simple but the controls work well and there is not much more needed for this type of game. Only negative thing about it are the three or four same attack patterns from standard enemies. The graphics of these enemies change each level, but the attack patterns stay always the same. The NES version came at the same time as the Japanese Famicom Disk System version. That's a pretty rare case in the early NES era. Maybe Konami and Nintendo thought this type of game would do especially well in the US.***1 player or 2 players simultaneous cooperative.

Swords and sorcery will aid them on their quest; on this final fantasy.***Considering this game was released before Dragon Quest 3, I might say this was the best console RPG on the market at its time, with the exception of [url=http://www.uvlist.net/game-19754-Phantasy+Star]Phantasy Star[/url] perhaps. Graphics and music were very good, you could choose between plenty of character classes and the game told a good story. Today the random encounter rate with all those monster fights might seem too high, but this was a normal thing with early RPG's.***Published in Brazil, catalog number "NES-FF-BZL" is unconfirmed.

Trivia:
In the original Japanese version, Link's grave could be found. Nintendo published both Dragon Warrior and its rival [, this game Final Fantasy] in the USA. They changed a grave to Erdrick's, a hero from the Dragon Warrior game. Later editions for other systems restored Link's grave.***The NES game that started it all. Although heavily hyped by Nintendo at the time of its release, nobody could ever have predicted the soaring heights the series would eventually reach in the minds and hearts of gamers. This game probably did more to advance the cause of console RPGs than perhaps any other - which is surprising in retrospect, as the first FF is a stunningly average game. It has virtually none of the depth or character development that later games - including the two other Japanese-only Famicom/NES releases - would later make the hallmark of the FF name. The combat system is nice, but there's better out there for the NES. Plus, it gets annoying after a while, since you're having encounters at just about every step, especially in the later dungeons. All in all, look at the first Final Fantasy as the grade-schooler's notebook sketchings that eventually lead her to become a great artist.

Relesed December 18, 1987 by Square in Japan and 1989 by Nintendo in the US.***Yeah sure, it looks like crap by today's standards, the story is almost non-existant, there is zero character development, the music is... well... it's an NES for god's sake! But this was my first Japanese RPG (you have no idea how long I had to save my allowance for this) and nothing you say can make me hate it. NOTHING!

There is a really good Final Fantasy One hack called [i]Final Fantasy ++[/i] and its sequel [i]Final Fantasy ++ World of Chaos[/i]. If you're a fan of the game, it's definately worth checking out.

It features:

* Redone graphics. (Mostly ripped from later games in the series.)
* Redone enemies. (Many are new; some are returning enemies with new properties.)
* Redone magic spells. (Magic is now divided into White, Black, and Time Magic.)
* Redone weapons and armor. (Some armors now increase evasion rather than lowering it!)
* Redone maps. (Most are similar to the original game’s; some are totally new.)
* Redone character class system. (See Read Me.txt for details.)
* Two new pieces of music. (Adapted from Final Fantasy 4.)
* Some other relatively minor stuff.

This is the second game in Square's popular Final Fantasy series. It was released only in Japan (the Japanese Final Fantasy IV was released as Final Fantasy II in the U.S.). The game emphasizes the storyline more than the first game: four young refugees from a conquered kingdom join a rebel movement in hopes of striking back at their oppressors. Players must engage in conversion collecting key words to ask key people about in order to advance the plot. Character's have identities and personalities unlike in FF1. This is emphasized by character portraits of all the player characters, the fact that there are many player characters that come and go as their role in the plot dictates, and the frequent use of player characters' names by NPC's. Familial relationships between characters are also frequently noted. The graphics aren't terribly advanced beyond FF1's, but the experience system was completely revamped. Instead of gaining EXP and levels, the heroes gain points in the abilities that they use. Attacking a lot increases strength. Getting hit a lot increases defense. Casting the Fire spell a lot increases the spell's power. Using an axe increase axe fighting ability. An interesting concept (usually reserved for computer RPGs), but one that makes for a difficult game (as long as the endemic exploits of this game's system are not utilized). A translation to English patch for the ROM is available.

[Zerothis]***Sequel of the successful Final Fantasy. It has a really good storyline and a new system where you have to improve abilities/skills by using them, instead of gaining XP and levels in the traditional way. Still a good RPG, but I really didn't like the way the skill system seduced you to find ways to make leveling up easier by e.g. hitting your own party members. It somehow ruined the whole pace of the game.

You run around in different British cities and try to find clues about something I don't know about. And actually I couldn't care less, because the game is bad, one of the worst games for the Famicom I have played so far. So, there you have your top-view running around in the city scenes, where you kick and stab innocent looking citizens to gain money. Additionally there are locations where the game switches to side-view platform scenes, which have terrible controls. And everytime! you beat one of the numerous evil looking humans the game stops and gives you a text message which might be some kind of hints. And everything in this game, all items and clues are very well hidden. Yes, I admit that many old games had things very well hidden on the brink of unfairness, but at least they had acceptable controls. The music is an extremely annoying high-pitched something. So eventually (if you happen to play this game for longer than 5 minutes) you might buy a trip to the next city for more unplayable action goodness.
